For those marketers who are looking for a new untapped gold mine, becoming a mobile marketing consultant in your local city could be exactly what you are looking for.
In this post I am going to cover both why you should at least consider becoming an mobile marketing consultant, and also how you can become one.
To start off with though, lets rewind back to about a decade ago when Google was just starting to become popular. Internet marketers were taking advantage of services such as Google Adwords, email marketing, and affiliate marketing.
The extremely low barriers to entry, the extremely low cost to advertise and also the lack of competition in basically every niche, made it a very easy way to make bucket loads of money back then.
Email was a novelty back in these early days. Do you remember the AOL alert "You've Got Mail". People got excited back then when they heard that someone sent them an email. The internet was a completely untapped medium that was ripe for the picking. The wave of opportunity had just started.
By the middle of the decade people were starting to catch on about the opportunities online, but there was still plenty of room in the market place for people to find untapped profitable niches. Ebooks were the new trend during this period, and some people were making a lot of money selling information products to solve common problems.
The middle of the wave was approaching but there was still time left to make some money if you knew what you were doing.
By the end of decade things had changed considerably. Google Adwords basically banned all affiliate marketers and people were getting sick of getting loads of spam emails in their inbox. The open rate for emails was estimated at around 10%. By this stage basically every niche imaginable was starting to become crowded and the wave was well and truly starting to disappear.
Now, we are at the stage where the wave has gone completely and for the little guy it is close to impossible to start from scratch and rise to riches. The large majority of the money has already been made from internet marketing, and it is only the established top earners that will be making good money.
For the little guy it is a very tough road to follow now that advertising costs are huge, and competition is fierce. I'm sure there will be some exceptions, but not many in my opinion. The established top earners and the corporations have already formed a monopoly over internet marketing and online advertising.
It is for this reason that I have started to look at other alternatives, and after doing a lot of research I have decided that at this point mobile marketing (to local businesses) is the best way to get in at the start of the newest wave – that is largely untapped.
Why Should I Consider Becoming A Mobile Marketing Consultant In My City?
1. Nearly every person in the Western World owns a smart phone
People carry their mobile phone with them everywhere, and unlike a computer they generally have access to it 24 hours a day. People don't sit in front of their computers all day and therefore emails are usually opened many hours after they are sent, if not days.
By building a mobile list (as opposed to an email list) you will in most cases have your text messages opened within 15 minutes of sending them out. And as well as building a list with text messages, you can also easily create an app which people can download and have instant access to.
The sheer convenience and size of a mobile phone means that you can easily keep in contact with your customers on a regular basis.
2. Instead of selling to consumers, you are selling to business owners
The B2B (business to business) business model is far more respectable than the B2C (business to consumer) business model.
As a salesperson or consultant selling to consumers you are usually faced with the prospect of peddling low quality products to people that don't have much money to spend. You need to speak to a lot of people to get anywhere, and will cop a lot of rejections. Multi level marketing and network marketing companies are classic examples of this.
As a mobile marketing consultant you are only dealing with businesses, usually local businesses. And on the plus side you are offering a respectable product that most companies have not tried yet. Once you show the untapped potential to these business owners, you should be able to sign a lot of them up, providing you pick the right type of businesses.
The idea is to target the industries that have money, and a monthly marketing budget. Professionals such as dentists, real estate agents, accountants are classic examples of businesses that would be excited to get involved with mobile marketing.
3. The niche is still new and basically untapped, and has been regarded as the most powerful business trend of our lifetime.
Businesses everywhere are being flooded with enquiries from internet marketing consultants to help them with things such as social media, SEO and pay per click advertising. The internet marketing consulting niche is completely saturated and this has forced the prices down in order to get business.
But very few of these businesses have any one knocking on their door offering mobile marketing services (yet). Some people have called it the most powerful business trend of our lifetime, and with good reason as it is clear that we are going to be doing nearly everything with our mobile phones in the near future.
4. Text Messages have a much higher open rate than emails do
The reason for this is obvious – emails are free and text messages cost money. The spammers go crazy with email because it does not cost them anything. And because of this the average person is getting up to 100 emails a day, or more. As mentioned above email was highly regarded a decade ago, but it is not anymore due to abundance of annoying spam.
Text messages are very rarely spam and are almost always opened, usually within 15 minutes. Statistics suggest that 90% of emails are never opened and around 97% of text messages ARE opened. So with this in mind, you can see why building a mobile list in the near future is a lot more useful than building an email list.
5. Over 50% of online searches are taking place on a mobile device.
Because of the sheer convenience of the mobile phone there are a lot of searches being done on Google and other search engines, and a large majority of these searches are local searches.
Searches for things such as restaurants, banks, petrol stations, malls etc are extremely useful for the mobile user on the go.
6. Cheap running costs
To get your clients you will usually be either calling the businesses, or knocking on their door and introducing yourself. These methods are basically free and make it a lot easier to actually make a profit.
With internet marketing you are usually paying for SEO, pay per click, banner advertising etc and this can be extremely expensive. Advertising costs are extremely competitive online, but with this type of business model you do not need any of that.
How Do I Become A Mobile Marketing Consultant In My Local City?
Well in simple terms there are two ways you can make it happen:
1. Build a qualified team around yourself and you go out seeking business
This option would appeal to many people as you are effectively cutting out the middle man and creating your own company. The problem with this is that it is nowhere near as easy as it sounds, and you really have to know what you are doing.
The obvious advantage is that you will keep the majority of the sale as profit for yourself, but the downside is that you need to have a fully functioning business in the background ready to fulfill the orders and handle customer service.
It is not quite as easy as just outsourcing it to a bunch of programmers in India, as ultimately you are responsible to deliver exactly what you have offered the customer. Outsourcing it to people overseas that you hardly know is a bad idea, because it is quite likely that they will let you down with both quality and agreed deadlines.
If your team in the background is unreliable then your customers will simply cancel the service and never do business with you again. So, if you do take this option then make sure you know what you are doing.
2. You become a consultant for an established mobile marketing business
This is my recommended option simply because all you need to do is focus on connecting with business owners, and show them how you can improve their bottom line with your mobile marketing package.
The company you are consulting for is responsible for fulfilling the customers orders and handling the customer service. This eliminates the need for finding developers and answering customer service queries yourself.
And if you join a decent company you will be fully trained and supported to ensure that you know what to do and say when contacting your local businesses. Ideally the owners of the business will be experienced entrepreneurs that have a track record of success.
